Thoughts from the insights of Merleau Ponty
Perception does not begin in the intellect; it emerges from the recesses of The Body. My practice explores how human experience, memory, and trauma or physically held, processed, and externalise through monumental, gestural drawing and painting.
Working intuitively through automatic mark-making, my hands trace and delineate an internal orientation in the world – a landscape shaped not only by personal history, but by a shared human vulnerability. Marks made directly with fingers, charcoal, and pigment bypass rational defences to access a pre-verbal layer of awareness. The canvas/paper becomes a physical record of thought taking shape through action.
In turn, the viewer encounters the work through their own physical being. Perception occurs out in the space between The body and the artwork, were emotional resonance
is felt before it is analysed. By mapping the terrain of memory and resilience, my work seeks to create a somatic bridge: an invitation for others to navigate, process, and reckon with their own histories through the physical presence of mine.
